From the highlands with red-brick homes terraced into rice paddies to the spiny forests of the south where plants unique to this island cling in dramatic formations, the landscape feels alive with wonder. This journey moves at a thoughtful pace so you can soak in nature’s bold colours local culture and the rhythms of everyday life.

Over eighteen immersive days you’ll walk along trails where the largest lemurs sing their morning greetings and explore forested reserves rich with medicinal plants guiding your understanding of this place’s depth. You’ll take a rickshaw through Antsirabe and visit aluminium-cooking-pot artisans in Ambatolampy before heading into rural villages high in the Malagasy highlands. You’ll wander the golden sandstone canyons of Isalo National Park swim in natural pools pause by the iconic avenue of baobabs and meet the Vezo fishermen on Anakao’s shores whose canoes trace ancient routes along the Indian Ocean. Due to the flight schedule to Madagascar, you have a one-night stopover in Mauritius including return airport transfers.

Day 02 – 14 May 2026 | Arrive Antananarivo

Welcome to Madagascar!

Arrival from your international flight, meet and greet by your English-speaking tour guide. Transfer to your hotel, a light snack will be offered along the way. Get settled at your hotel upon your arrival.

Day 03 – 15 May 2026 | Antananarivo – Andasibe

Drive to Andasibe [150 kms / 5 hrs. approx.]

Breakfast at your hotel then drive east towards Périnet National Park. On of the main roads of the country, it is relying on the most important seaport in Toamasina and the capital Antananarivo, a heavy traffic. You leave the highlands by the steep slope of Mandraka where the forest starts. You arrive in Andasibe at the beginning of the afternoon. Installation at your hotel upon your arrival. Provided lunch at your hotel. In the midafternoon, meet with your guide and head to Mitsinjo forest. Located adjacent to Andasibe National Park, Mitsinjo Park is composed of a little over 700 ha of rainforest and abandoned timber plantation that has been restored to native forest. Known primarily as the best place in Madagascar to view the Indri, it is home to at least 12 other species of lemur and is also popular for bird watching and for its diverse reptiles and amphibians. The forest managed by Mitsinjo now covers a considerable area of original rainforest and vegetation currently being restored to it. Situated in one of the biodiversity hotspots of Madagascar, Mitsinjo Park is exceptionally rich in biodiversity, from plants to insects to frogs to birds to lemurs. The forest is home to up to nine groups of Indri, two of which have been habituated thanks to the splendid efforts of Mitsinjo’s monitoring agents.

Day 4 – 16 May 2026 | Andasibe – Analamazaorta Reserve

We walk with a local guide to discover this protected area. It is mainly covered with primary forest peculiar to the east side of Madagascar. Many rare and endemic species can be found in this rainforest. The biodiversity is so amazing, we can meet Indri-indri, the largest of lemurs here. His behaviour is fascinating, and your guide will explain all about him. Many other species are living there such as Grey Bamboo lemur (Hapalemur griseus), Wooly lemur (Avahi Laninger) and others. Flora is also very interesting; there are several species of medicinal plants.

Day 5 – 17 May 2026 | Andasibe – Private Reserve – Antananarivo

Drive to Antananarivo [170 kms / 5 hrs. approx.]

The morning was dedicated to visit the Vakona private Reserve, an easy way to find different species of lemurs. They represent most of the species in Madagascar. Provided lunch at your hotel before driving back to Antananarivo in the afternoon.

Dinner at a local restaurant then get settled at your hotel.

Day 6 – 18 May 2026 | Antananarivo

Breakfast is at hotel.

Enjoy a cooking workshop at CAFE DU MUSEE.
The cook will share to you his know-how regarding the Malagasy typical foods. The lunch will be taken there. In the middle of the afternoon Queen’s Palace with an historian guide and visit the Queen’s palace. Drive back to your hotel in the evening.

Day 7 – 19 May 2026 | Antananarivo – Antsirabe

Drive towards Antsirabe. [170 kms 5 hrs. approx.]

After breakfast, head to the South by crossing the National 7. Rice fields and typical villages of the Highlands represent the landscape right after Antananarivo. Stop in Ambatolampy to discover how amazing the work of aluminium is to make cooking pot for the whole country. Continuation towards Antsirabe. We arrive in Antsirabe in the middle of the afternoon, short city tour by rickshaw, then get settled at your hotel.

Provided lunch at a local restaurant along the way.

Day 8 – 20 May 2026 | Walk along the Highlands

Breakfast is at hotel.

The highlands, there are the iconic scenarios of Madagascar. A mountainous and agricultural environment, which is unique. You will stroll along the traditional houses of the highlands made by red brick with balcony and thatched roof then the bronzed rice field. This beautiful walk will bring you to the rural area and its high and colourful landscapes. You will encounter the warm and welcoming villagers. They are working on their lands and rice fields, women are bringing their bucket of water on their head in the African way, blacksmiths who still use ancients’ methods. Transfer to your hotel in the afternoon, installation at your hotel.

NB: The walk will be at your rhythm for approx. 4 hours.

Day 9 – 21 May 2026 | Antsirabe – Ranomafana

Drive towards Ranomafana. [230 kms 7 hrs. approx.]

We keep driving on the national number 7 and progress towards the south. Passing through Ambositra town, we go round the shops and visit Zafimaniry artisans to look for a piece of carved wood or finely done square box marquetry. You walk around town and have lunch in a local restaurant where you can taste local food specialties. We continue to Ranomafana, at Betsileo tribe region, we have a winding road; we are at the highest plateau of Madagascar highlands. Arrival at the end of the afternoon. Nocturnal visit outside the park in the evening. Please bring your headlamp and raincoat.

Day 10 – 22 May 2026 | Ranomafana National Park – Ambalavao

Drive towards Ambalavao. [120 kms 4 hrs. approx.]

Morning devoted to visit the Ranomafana forest after a copious breakfast. This is one of the best sites that Madagascar rainforest can offer you. We walk to visit the National Park with a local guide to look for bamboo lemurs, red fronted brown lemur, red-bellied brown lemur…live in the forest. There are several medicinal plants the local guide would show you. Drive towards Ambalavao in the afternoon. Get settled at your hotel upon your arrival.

NB: the level of walk difficulty depends on the participants’ ability and desire.

Day 11 – 23 May 2026 | Ambalavao – Anja Reserve – Ranohira

Drive towards Ranohira. [360 kms 6 hrs. approx.]

Breakfast at your hotel then visit the Antemoro paper factory. The secular process to make this paper by the bark of mulberry tree Avoha (Bosqueia danguyana) was introduced in Madagascar in the XVth century by the first Arabic migrants to transcribe the Koran. It is still made to the same processes in Ambalavao. Meet some lemurs in Anja small Reserve at this huge granite rock foothill. You continue the drive towards the southwest and enter the Bara region. We cross the largest plateau of Madagascar constituted by a beautiful herbaceous steppe, topped with huge termite nests: it is IHorombe. You will hit Ranohira which is close to Isalo massif and the National Park gate in the evening.

Day 12 – 24 May 2026 | Isalo National Park

A short drive to join Isalo foothill. We start the walk quietly with a small rucksack, through impressive landscape, canyons, natural pool, and magic rock erosions. Isalo ruin form massif is a continental sandstone plateau from Jurassic era. There are many rock formations with different shapes here.

Nature has adapted to dry climate. This Park has a different ecosystem, endemic rupicolas flora such as Aloe, Euphorbia, Pachypodium and Kalanchoe….We picnic in the Tapia Forest. Transfer to your hotel in the afternoon. In the evening, we have a sunset appetizer.

NB: Walk pace and duration depend on clients (minimum 2h). The guide will advise you.

Day 13 – 25 May 2026 | Ranohira – Tulear

Drive towards Tulear. [300 kms 5 hrs. approx.]

We progress to the southwest towards the Mozambique Channel. Drive from Ranohira to Tulear through different botanical settings in the morning. Crossing Ilakaka, the sapphire village. Lunch at a local restaurant then installation at your hotel. In the middle of afternoon, transfer to Reniala Reserve and visit. It is extended over an area of 60 hectares. Here, the thorns are kings. Fans will be able to discover specific and unique vegetation made up of euphorbias, baobabs, didieraceae, aloes with more than 1000 endemic plant species with xerophytic adaptations (to a dry climate). You will also see many endemic birds including Uratelornis. Transfer to your hotel in the evening.

Day 14 – 26 May 2026 | Tulear – Anakao

Breakfast is at hotel.

Early transfer to the jetty for the speedboat to Anakao. Anakao is a charming little harbor that comes alive with the tides and movements of the fishermen Vezo, the nomads of the sea. We can enjoy the Indian Ocean or stroll in the village and on the beach, especially when fishermen return home with their colourful dugout canoes. Rest of the day at leisure at the edge of the sea.

Day 15 – 27 May 2026 | Anakao Seaside stay

Walk around the village, meet locals, fishermen and their families, and see their way of life. If you ask them, they will gladly bring you for a small outing in the canoe. For those who prefer to walk, our suggestion is to go up the beach to the north, to the village of Soalary and St. Augustine Bay.

Day 16 – 28 May 2026 | Anakao Seaside stay

Walk around the village, meet locals, fishermen and their families, and see their way of life. If you ask them, they will gladly bring you for a small outing in the canoe. For those who prefer to walk, our suggestion is to go up the beach to the north, to the village of Soalary and St. Augustine Bay.

Day 17 – 29 May 2026 | Anakao – Tulear – Antananarivo

Transfer back to Tulear and transfer to your hotel for dayroom and lunch.
